34-year-old Miguel Cano, a CHP officer, was tragically killed in a crash at Bristol Parkway and Green Valley in Culver City early Wednesday morning.
The crash happened at about 12:30 a.m. Prior to the incident, Cano and his partner had just taken someone into custody and were transporting the suspect to the station when Cano told his partner he wasn’t feeling well.
His partner confirmed that he visibly looked unwell and had lost consciousness shortly after. This caused his vehicle to veer off the roadway and crash into a tree.
He was pronounced dead at around 1:40 a.m. Cano’s partner suffered minor injuries. The California Highway Patrol’s accident investigation team is handling the case and has already determined that drug involvement was not a factor in the incident.
Cano is remembered and honored in the Officer Down Memorial Page.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also posted a heartfelt tribute.
