RIVERSIDE, CA (November 3, 2024) – A high-speed crash early Saturday morning in Riverside claimed the lives of two teenagers and left a third seriously injured, according to a statement from the Riverside Police Department. Officers responded to the accident at around 5:40 a.m. on Wood Road near Van Buren Boulevard, where a gray Lexus and a blue Scion had collided in the intersection.
The Riverside Fire Department, also dispatched to the scene, extinguished flames consuming the Lexus and discovered two of the vehicle’s three occupants deceased inside. Initial police reports indicate that the Lexus, driven by a 17-year-old male, was traveling northbound on Wood Road at a high rate of speed and ran a red light at the Van Buren Boulevard intersection. At the same time, a blue Scion was crossing the intersection westbound on Van Buren Boulevard with a green light.
Following the collision, the Lexus continued northward, hitting a cement light pole, a wooden electrical pole, and finally a tree before catching fire. The 17-year-old driver and an 18-year-old female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant, another 17-year-old male, sustained serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital. The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.
The occupants of the Scion, a driver and one passenger, were unharmed and stayed at the scene to assist with the police investigation. Preliminary findings from Riverside Police suggest that speed, along with possible alcohol or drug involvement, may have contributed to the Riverside car crash.
