RIVERSIDE, CA (July 18, 2024) — Approximately 20 people, most of them children, sustained injuries following a hazardous materials situation at a Riverside pool on Tuesday afternoon. The incident took place around 3:30 p.m. at Villegas Park, where there was a possible chlorine and acid exposure, according to the Riverside Fire Department.
The Riverside Police reported that the number of injured individuals ranges from 20 to 25. Firefighters promptly responded to the scene, transporting three individuals to the hospital who were experiencing minor symptoms such as coughing and wheezing. The remaining affected individuals were assessed on-site and released after receiving necessary medical attention.
Investigators are diligently working to determine the exact cause of the incident. The leading theory from the fire department suggests that the chlorine did not mix properly before entering the pool, leading to the exposure.
Villegas Park has temporarily closed its pool facility as a precaution while the investigation continues. The city officials are coordinating with health and safety inspectors to ensure this Riverside Pool hazmat accident does not happen again.
