Red Light Violation Leads to Fatal Collision in Hyde Park

CRENSHAW, CA (April 18, 2024) — A tragic accident occurred in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Los Angeles late Tuesday night, resulting in the death of a young man. The incident took place around 11:15 p.m. at the intersection of West Florence Avenue and Crenshaw Blvd., where a speeding SUV ran a red light and collided with a gray sedan.
Los Angeles Police Department Detective Gerald Chavarria reported that the black BMW SUV was traveling westbound at a high rate of speed when it struck the sedan, causing it to spin out and come to a stop nearly 80 feet away. The sedan’s driver, a 25-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The SUV driver was detained but showed no signs of impairment from drugs or alcohol. Police are investigating the possibility of racing involved in the crash. “We have evidence that it [the SUV] ran the red light,” Chavarria was quoted as saying before noting that further investigations will ascertain if additional violations occurred.
