Cal Poly Student Dies in Climbing Accident at Big Sur
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA (April 10, 2024) — A tragic accident claimed the life of Kenneth Taylor, a third-year mechanical engineering student at California Polytechnic State University, during a trip to Big Sur this past weekend.
According to university officials and local reports, Taylor was involved in a climbing accident at Salmon Creek waterfall.
The San Luis Obispo Tribune reported that Taylor’s body was discovered in the pool at the base of the waterfall after local authorities responded to the Big Sur accident. Known for his love of the outdoors, Taylor was a founding member of Cal Poly’s Alpine Club and a trip leader with ASI Poly Escapes.
Originally from Richland, Washington, Taylor was remembered by peers and faculty as exceptionally skilled, kind, witty, and inspirational. Cal Poly has reached out to offer support to Taylor’s family and friends.
