14-Year-Old Driver Killed, Two Injured in Northern California Crash

NORTHERN CALIFORNIA, CA (May 29, 2024) — A single-vehicle crash on Memorial Day in Northern California claimed the life of a 14-year-old driver and left two passengers, including an 8-year-old girl, with major injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Officers responded around 2:10 p.m. Monday to Mormon Emigrant Trail, west of Park Creek Road in Pollock Pines. A Ford Ranger pickup truck, traveling west, veered off the road and struck a tree, said Officer Hugh Council, a spokesperson for the CHP’s Placerville office.
The passengers included an 8-year-old girl and a 40-year-old man. Firefighters from the El Dorado County Fire Protection District transported one person to a hospital and airlifted another to UC Davis Medical Center.
The relationships between the victims and the reason the 14-year-old was driving are currently unknown, as California law requires drivers to be at least 15.5 years old to hold a learner’s permit. The cause of the Northern California vehicle crash remains under investigation, Council said.
