Alameda County Sheriff’s Dispatcher Killed by Drunk Driver

SAN LEANDRO, CA (May 8, 2024) — A tragic incident occurred late Sunday night in San Leandro, California, when Antoinette Finau, a dispatcher for the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, was killed in a vehicle collision by an alleged drunk driver. The crash happened around 11:15 p.m. at the intersection of East 14th Street and 150th Avenue.
Responding to a report of a rollover collision, San Leandro police found Finau unconscious with significant injuries after her car was broadsided and overturned as she passed through the intersection. She was promptly taken to a nearby hospital, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
The other driver involved in the San Leandro drunk driving accident was unharmed and has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Lt. Jeffrey Walton of the San Leandro Police Department expressed his condolences, stating, “This is a tragic loss of life and a painful reminder of the dangers of driving while impaired.”
Finau was on her way to work at the time of the accident. The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office mourned the loss on Facebook, describing Finau as a “dedicated, energetic, loving” member of their team who took pride in her role because “helping others gave her joy.”
In a poignant tribute, law enforcement colleagues and family members escorted Finau’s body to the coroner’s bureau early Monday. The community and her colleagues are now mourning the loss of a committed public servant whose life was cut short by a preventable act of recklessness.
