Man Changing Tire On The Road Dies in Highway 101 Crash

CALIFORNIA (July 22, 2024) — The California Highway Patrol provided an update on a fatal crash that occurred on Highway 101 on Saturday, involving multiple vehicles and resulting in one death.
The Highway 101 crash happened around 1:07 p.m. south of Laurel Drive. A 77-year-old Salinas man was changing the tire of a silver Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck on the right shoulder. Nearby, a maroon Nissan Altima was parked, and a 38-year-old Salinas woman stood close to the pickup truck.
At the same time, a black 2005 Acura TL, driven by 24-year-old Jose Ramiro Sanchez Jr. of Salinas, was traveling in the number 2 lane. As Sanchez Jr. approached the parked vehicles, he veered off the road, sideswiping the woman.
The Acura then continued south, striking the man changing the tire before crashing into the pickup truck. This impact caused the pickup to collide with the rear of the Nissan Altima and overturn onto its right side. The Acura spun out and collided with a white 2003 Honda Pilot driven by a 29-year-old man from Soledad, who had at least two children in the vehicle. Fortunately, no one in the Honda Pilot was injured.
The 77-year-old man changing the tire died at the scene from his injuries. His identity will be released after next of kin are notified. The Salinas woman suffered major abdominal injuries and was transported to Natividad Medical Center. Sanchez Jr. also sustained moderate injuries and was treated at the same hospital. He was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
