Repeat DUI Offender Arrested After Fatal Hit-and-Run in Orange
ORANGE COUNTY, CA (March 13, 2024) — In a tragic incident in Orange, a pedestrian was fatally struck by a driver with a history of DUI convictions.
The collision occurred shortly after 11 a.m. on Tuesday on North Tustin Street near East Walnut Avenue. According to Orange Police, the driver, identified as 31-year-old Jonathan Lopez, hit the man crossing the street with his gray sedan and fled the scene despite the vehicle’s significant damage.
Local residents and witnesses were quick to react, with one describing the crash’s sound as akin to two cars colliding. Orange Police Lt. Phil McMullin reported that the suspect “ran him over and fled north without stopping to check on him at all.”
Authorities were led to the suspect by witnesses, finding Lopez and his severely damaged silver-colored Scion about a mile away from the crash site following a brief chase.
Lopez showed clear signs of alcohol intoxication upon his arrest and faces charges of felony DUI, felony hit-and-run, evading, and vehicular homicide. With four prior DUI convictions in the past decade, Lopez’s arrest brings a dangerous driver off the streets, according to Lt. McMullin. The identity of the victim has not been disclosed as the investigation on the hit-and-run in Orange County continues.
