A newly sworn-in officer with the San Francisco Police Department was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence following a solo vehicle crash in the city’s Bayview District early Sunday morning.
San Francisco police confirmed that the incident happened just before 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Third Street and Wallace Avenue — a mixed-use corridor in the southeastern part of the city. The officer, who joined the force in October 2023, was reportedly off duty at the time of the crash.
Emergency responders arrived to find the vehicle involved in the collision with significant damage. The officer, whose identity has not yet been released, was transported to a local hospital for evaluation before being taken into custody on DUI charges. There were no reported injuries to pedestrians or other motorists.
In a brief statement Sunday evening, SFPD officials emphasized that the department holds its members to the highest standards of conduct and accountability. “While the investigation is ongoing, this incident is being taken very seriously. The officer has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome,” a department spokesperson said.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s Office has been notified and is expected to review the case for potential formal charges. Body camera footage was not involved, as the officer was not on duty at the time of the incident.
The rookie officer is currently being held at San Francisco County Jail and is expected to be arraigned in the coming days.
