A late-night police pursuit in the Grant Hill neighborhood of San Diego ended in tragedy Friday when a car slammed into a wall, killing a 52-year-old passenger and seriously injuring the driver.
The incident began around 11:30 p.m. when officers attempted to pull over a gray Mercedes-Benz C230 for a traffic violation. The vehicle failed to yield, prompting a pursuit through city streets.
According to San Diego Police, the chase continued eastbound on J Street. As the driver attempted a sharp right turn near the intersection of 29th Street, the vehicle lost control and crashed head-on into a wall.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the collision and found both the driver and front-seat passenger with critical injuries. They were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The driver, whose identity has not been released, sustained a broken femur and remains hospitalized. The 52-year-old passenger was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the hospital, officials confirmed. Neither individual has been publicly identified.
The San Diego Police Department is investigating the circumstances of the crash, including whether impairment or reckless driving played a role. The department has not released details about the original reason for the attempted traffic stop.
