ESCONDIDO, CA – A suspected drunk driver caused a violent crash Saturday night in Escondido, leaving a Jeep overturned and engulfed in flames, with several people injured.
The DUI crash in Escondido happened around 6:30 p.m. on the northbound I-15 on-ramp to eastbound State Route 78, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
Authorities say the SUV driver was recklessly speeding at over 100 mph. After losing control, the vehicle veered across a divider and slammed into a Jeep, causing it to flip and burst into flames.
A witness quickly jumped into action, rescuing two people trapped inside the burning Jeep. Both were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. The SUV driver and a child passenger were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
After receiving medical attention, the driver was arrested on felony DUI charges and booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
