CALIFORNIA (November 12, 2024) – California’s new “daylighting” law, AB413, will be enforced beginning Jan. 1, 2025, with the goal of improving pedestrian safety at crosswalks statewide by increasing visibility around intersections.
Under this new regulation, no vehicle—whether personal or commercial—may park or stop within 20 feet of any marked or unmarked crosswalk. This rule applies universally, even in areas without red curbs, and aims to give drivers a better view of crosswalks, particularly in busy urban neighborhoods.
Passed in response to a statewide increase in pedestrian injuries and fatalities over the past decade, the California Daylighting Law addresses what safety advocates say is a “line of sight” issue worsened by larger vehicle sizes and increased speeds.
