Amazon Workers in California Allege Labor Law Violations Over Rest Breaks

SAN BERNARDINO, CA (May 1, 2024) — At Amazon’s Air Hub in San Bernardino, employees are raising concerns over what they describe as systematic violations of California’s labor laws, particularly regarding rest breaks.
Ramp agent Cynthia Ayala and her colleagues, who handle the strenuous task of loading and unloading aircraft for up to 10-hour shifts, claim they are not receiving the legally mandated rest periods.
California Labor Law stipulates that employees working over 10 hours are entitled to three 10-minute breaks. However, Ayala reports that taking the third break is often not allowed, affecting worker safety and health. “I have a friend who almost got into a car accident from exhaustion due to missed breaks during his 11.5-hour shifts,” Ayala was quoted as saying, highlighting the risks of such oversight.
Despite repeated grievances and protests led by Inland Empire Amazon Workers United, the company has yet to respond to these allegations directly. Instead, Amazon has announced a $750 million investment in worker safety improvements for the year. This move, while promising, does not address the immediate concerns on Amazon labor law violations, specifically about missed breaks and alleged wage theft.
As workers demand proper rest breaks, overtime opportunities, and back pay for missed breaks, the issue continues to gain attention.
