Big Rig Overturns and Leaks Fuel in Alameda County After Driver Falls Asleep
ALAMEDA, CA (April 14, 2024) — A big rig was involved in a solo crash that led to an overturned vehicle and a fuel leak in Alameda County early Thursday morning.
The incident occurred just after 1:30 a.m. on the northbound Hwy 238 connector to southbound I-880 near San Lorenzo. The driver, who reported falling asleep at the wheel, crashed into the median, causing the truck to roll over and disrupt traffic.
Alameda County Fire officials, who responded to the scene, reported that the truck began leaking diesel fuel. However, the leakage was contained, with less than 40 gallons spilled and no fuel entering the storm drains. Despite the minimal environmental impact, the Alameda big rig crash is being managed as a hazardous materials incident.
Thankfully, there were no injuries reported. The connector ramp was temporarily shut down, and cleanup operations are underway.
