California Mother-Daughter Sentenced in Fatal Cosmetic Procedure Case
LOS ANGELES, CA (April 19, 2024) — A Riverside woman and her daughter were sentenced for involuntary manslaughter after a fatal buttocks augmentation procedure.
Despite the sentencing to state prison — four years and four months for Libby Adame, 53, and three years and eight months for her daughter, Alicia Galaz, 26 — they were ordered released by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge George G. Lomeli due to time already served under electronic monitoring.
The California Brazilian butt lift death case stemmed from the death of 26-year-old Karissa Rajpaul, who died on October 15, 2019, after undergoing what is popularly known as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) at a Sherman Oaks residence. The procedure involved injecting silicone directly into the buttocks, a method not approved by the FDA and known to pose serious health risks, including death from silicone embolisms.
The defendants, who operated without medical licenses, fled the scene without informing emergency responders of the injection, complicating life-saving efforts. They were acquitted of a more serious murder charge but were found guilty of practicing medicine without certification.
The victim’s mother, Eureka Bobee, in a statement read in court, expressed profound grief and urged the defendants not to harm others. The case highlights significant concerns over unlicensed medical practices and the dangers they pose to public health.
