Critical Injury in Hesperia Following Paint Can Explosion
HESPERIA, CA (April 20, 2024) — A man was critically injured by an exploding paint can on Mariposa Road in Hesperia. The Hesperia paint can explosion took place on the afternoon of April 18, 2024, involving an older model Chevy 1500 pickup truck.
The San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to the scene around 2:40 p.m. after reports of a vehicle fire near the I-15 freeway. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a small fire in the rear of the truck parked on the south dirt shoulder of Mariposa Road.
According to Sheriff’s spokeswoman Amanda Paslak, the fire began in a paint can within the vehicle.
“While attempting to extinguish the fire, the can exploded in the individual’s face, resulting in severe burns,” Paslak explained. The injured man was initially going to be airlifted to a trauma center; however, due to delays in securing a helicopter, he was transported by ground ambulance to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
The truck was subsequently towed from the scene, and the Hesperia Police Department has taken over the ongoing investigation.
