Eight Firefighters Injured in Fire Truck Crash Near Irvine

ORANGE COUNTY, CA (September 20, 2024) — Eight firefighters suffered injuries when their fire truck overturned on a freeway near Irvine, California, on Thursday night. The Orange County Fire Authority vehicle crashed on State Route 241 around 6:50 p.m. in the Portola Springs area, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A ladder lying in the roadway caused the fire truck and another vehicle ahead to swerve, leading the truck to collide with a guard rail and overturn. No other vehicles appeared to be involved in the incident.
Initially, authorities reported 12 injured firefighters but later confirmed that eight were hurt—six with serious injuries and two with minor ones. One firefighter was airlifted to a hospital, while the others were transported by paramedics to local medical centers. Two patients were reported in stable condition.
The firefighters injured in Irvine had been returning home after a 12-hour shift battling the massive Airport Fire, Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessey said. “We ask that you pray for our firefighters and their families,” he added.
The northbound lanes of State Route 241 were closed for several hours following the crash but reopened early Friday morning after crews cleared the debris.
