Fatal Cliff Plunge Along Highway 1 Near Devil’s Slide
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (April 19, 2024) — A tragic incident occurred on the San Francisco Peninsula coast when a vehicle plummeted 200 feet off a cliff along Highway 1, resulting in the driver’s death.
The crash took place just south of Gray Whale Cove State Beach in Montara, and was reported by Cal Fire’s San Mateo/Santa Cruz unit shortly after 1 p.m. on Thursday.
Emergency responders, including a CHP helicopter crew, quickly arrived at the scene, where they lowered a rescuer to the rocks to reach the wrecked vehicle. The driver, who was alone in the car at the time of the accident, did not survive. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The Devil’s Slide accident caused significant traffic disruptions along Highway 1, with one-way traffic control implemented for several hours. Traffic flow returned to normal by late afternoon, following the clearing of the scene.
