Federal Judge Larry Hicks Killed by Vehicle in Reno

(May 31, 2024) — Federal Judge Larry Hicks, 80, was killed Wednesday after being struck by a vehicle near the federal courthouse in Reno. Reno police reported that the driver cooperated with authorities, and impairment was not suspected.
Hicks, nominated to the U.S. District Court for Nevada by President George W. Bush in 2001, was known for handling high-profile cases.
He sentenced Nevada lobbyist Harvey Whittemore to two years in prison for illegal campaign contributions and ruled in the “Operation G-sting” political corruption case.
Hicks also made significant rulings in environmental cases, including blocking a metals mine and halting a federal wild horse roundup.
He is survived by his family, including Washoe County District Attorney Chris Hicks. The family described him as a devoted family man and a respected jurist.
