Four Dead, Two Arrested in SR-163 DUI Crash

KEARNY MESA, CA (July 20, 2024) — A multi-car crash on southbound State Route 163 in Kearny Mesa early Friday morning left four people dead and resulted in the arrest of two drivers on suspicion of DUI.
The collision, involving three vehicles, occurred around 1:30 a.m. near Interstate 805. California Highway Patrol officers arrived to find several individuals lying on the freeway and two Toyota Prii and a Toyota Tacoma overturned.
Two people were declared dead at the scene, and two others later died at a local hospital. All four victims were occupants of a Prius that ended up on the left shoulder. Their identities have not been released, but officials stated three were men in their mid to late 20s. It is unclear if they were wearing seatbelts.
The driver of the overturned Tacoma was arrested on suspicion of DUI. The truck had no passengers, and no injuries were reported. The driver of the other Prius, which ended up on the right shoulder, was also arrested on suspicion of DUI. This vehicle had no passengers, and no injuries were reported.
CHP officers identified the arrested drivers as a 32-year-old man and a 25-year-old man.
A SigAlert closed all southbound lanes of SR-163 for over 11 hours, disrupting the morning commute. The major accident investigation team collected evidence as traffic was rerouted. All lanes reopened by 1:30 p.m., according to Caltrans San Diego.
The cause of the SR-163 DUI incident is still under investigation, with officials examining whether there were two separate collisions. Further details are currently unavailable.
