Gardena Grapples with Illegal Dumping Crisis Involving 450 lbs of Pig Waste
LOS ANGELES, CA (May 2, 2024) — The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office is intensifying efforts to curb the rampant illegal dumping plaguing Gardena, particularly after the discovery of 450 lbs of pig carcasses at a notorious site.
This latest incident of pig waste dumping in Gardena marks the third such dumping of meat in the area, which is also burdened by extensive trash buildup and a large RV homeless encampment.
In response, authorities are planning to install surveillance cameras at the intersection of 133rd and Broadway to deter future violations. The site has become a hotspot for illegal activities, attracting vermin and posing significant health risks, as reported by Justino Miramontes, a local business owner.
Despite regular community cleanups, the problem persists. Alvin Huezo of Universal Waste Services expressed frustration at the relentless cycle of waste accumulation. “We clean up today, tomorrow it’ll be the same,” Huezo lamented.
The Harbor Gateway Chamber of Commerce has played a crucial role in tracking down offenders by investigating remnants left at the site, such as packaging with identifiable information. “We found ribs in boxes with a serial number that led us to a distributor in Colorado, pointing to a local restaurant as the likely source of the dumping,” revealed David Matthews from the Chamber.
The LA County Board of Supervisor Holly Mitchell’s office has condemned the unlawful dumping, highlighting the collective responsibility to maintain clean and safe neighborhoods.
