Granada Hills Montessori School Fires Staff After Child Abuse Allegations
GRANADA HILLS, CA (July 9, 2024) — The Granada Hills Montessori Preschool recently dismissed a teacher and two co-teachers following allegations of child abuse, including an incident where a student was reportedly duct-taped.
This action was prompted by reports from parents whose children disclosed they were punished physically, including being slapped and having their hair pulled for failing to perform tasks like reciting numbers or managing zippers.
The abuse came to light when parents learned that children were subjected to harsh disciplinary measures, such as being duct-taped to cots during nap times for talking. Once the administration was alerted on July 3, they terminated the employees involved and started an immediate investigation into the “nontraditional steps in the classroom.”
The school has taken several steps to address the situation, including reporting to the Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing, and implementing a new system for anonymous reporting of misconduct or abuse by staff, parents, and students. Additionally, the school now requires all staff to undergo formal training on child abuse prevention every two years, supplemented by specialized training provided by the Department of Social Services.
In response to the Granada Hills Montessori child abuse incidents, the school has also committed to enhancing its environment, ensuring that the safety and well-being of students remain a priority. Counseling services are being offered to affected students to aid in their recovery.
Parents of the children involved have expressed their intent to take legal action, reflecting the severity of the impact on their families.
