LA Agrees to $20.8M Settlement Over 2021 Sewage Spill

LOS ANGELES, CA (August 22, 2024) — Los Angeles will pay $20.8 million to settle federal charges related to a 2021 sewage spill that released over 12 million gallons of raw sewage into Santa Monica Bay. The July spill led to the closure of Dockweiler and El Segundo Beaches and caused widespread health issues, including skin rashes and headaches among local residents.
The city has committed to using the funds for repairs and upgrades at the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant, which is blamed for the spill. The settlement will also support environmental projects and address deficiencies uncovered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) during its investigation.
The LA sewage spill, one of the largest in recent decades, resulted from a malfunction at the plant, where a large piece of debris overwhelmed the filtering system. Despite a prior recall in 2020, the fixes proved inadequate, leading to continued problems. The city must now enhance its testing protocols and plant operations under the oversight of the EPA.
