Man in Wheelchair Fatally Struck by Vehicles in Eureka
EUREKA, CA (September 29, 2024) — A man using a wheelchair was killed Friday morning after being struck by two vehicles on West Harris Street near Elizabeth in Eureka, according to authorities. The incident occurred shortly before 8 a.m. as he was crossing the street near a WinCo grocery store.
Witnesses reported that both vehicles involved stopped at the scene, and the victim was not in the crosswalk at the time of the collision. The Eureka Police Department is investigating the fatal crash and has asked motorists to avoid West Harris Street between Spring and Albee due to significant traffic delays.
Local resident Desirae Zuniga described the chaotic scene, noting that a neighbor tried to alert oncoming traffic after the first collision, but a second vehicle also struck the man. Emergency responders performed CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Zuniga expressed concern over speeding in the area, stating that pedestrians frequently face dangers when crossing West Harris Street. “We need to cross the street to get groceries,” she said, adding that drivers often travel at speeds of 35 to 50 miles per hour.
The identities of the victim and the drivers have not been released pending notification of next of kin. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the Eureka vehicle accident.
