Man Killed in Crash with ACE Train in Tracy

TRACY, CA (April 20, 2024) — A 58-year-old man from Tracy was killed after his SUV collided with an Altamont Corridor Express train on Friday morning. The California Highway Patrol reported that the accident took place around 8 a.m. on Chrisman Road, near the railroad crossing just south of Bates Road.
Authorities stated that the man, driving a 2004 Honda SUV, maneuvered around the functioning railroad crossing arms and drove directly into the path of the westbound train, which was traveling approximately 70 mph towards the Tracy station. The train struck the passenger side of the Honda, splitting the vehicle in half and scattering wreckage across the south side of the tracks.
The ACE train, which had two locomotives and five passenger cars carrying 68 passengers, came to a stop about half a mile west of the collision site. Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the train’s passengers or crew.
The area around Chrisman Road was closed for several hours as authorities, assisted by a drone from the Tracy Police Department, conducted an investigation. The train passengers were transported to their destinations via city buses.
The westbound ACE train involved in the collision remained out of service for the rest of the day, although eastbound services continued as scheduled. The CHP is urging anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to come forward and contact the Tracy CHP office.
The ACE train crash serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic safety regulations at railroad crossings.
