SAN DIEGO, CA – Three people were killed in a crash involving a semi-truck on the 91 Freeway early Friday morning.
The incident happened around 4 a.m. when a pickup truck collided in the eastbound lanes near Valley View Street in Buena Park. Shortly after, a big rig struck the disabled pickup truck.
First responders arrived to find three adults inside the pickup truck, who were declared dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured. The semi-truck crash on 91 Freeway occurred as rain created slick road conditions across Southern California.
A SigAlert has been issued for all eastbound lanes of the 91 Freeway, except for the slow lane. Authorities have not yet confirmed when all lanes will reopen.
The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
Accidents involving semi-trucks on California’s freeways are particularly dangerous due to the size and weight of the vehicles involved. Data from the California Highway Patrol shows that collisions between passenger vehicles and large trucks often result in more severe injuries or fatalities.
The risk of these types of crashes increases with adverse weather conditions like rain, which can reduce visibility and make roadways slippery. Drivers are urged to exercise extra caution around semi-trucks, especially when weather conditions are less than ideal.
