LOS ANGELES, CA – A wrong-way crash on the 405 Freeway in Sherman Oaks early Tuesday morning left one person dead and two others injured, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Investigators say the crash happened after a driver entered the freeway going the wrong way near Skirball Center Drive and collided head-on with another vehicle in the carpool lane at the Valley Vista Boulevard exit.
Good Samaritans rushed to the scene and began performing CPR on the victims before emergency responders arrived. Despite lifesaving efforts by CHP officers, the wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The second driver, from Kern County, was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.
Southbound lanes were initially closed for the investigation, but two lanes reopened by 6:30 a.m. Traffic was backed up for miles on the freeway and Sepulveda Boulevard, with drivers advised to use alternative routes like Mulholland Drive. The investigation into the accident in Sherman Oaks is ongoing.
