San Diego authorities will pay $500,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by the parents of Trevor Heitmann, the 18-year-old whose 2018 McLaren crash on the 805 resulted in his death and the fatal injuries of a mother and her young daughter. Heitmann was a YouTube celebrity known as McSkillet.
The settlement, pending final approval by the city council on Tuesday, comes as the city agrees to revise its policy on responding to mental health calls.
Heitmann’s parents allege that their concerns over his erratic behavior were not adequately addressed when they called for help before the incident.
According to court documents, after expressing suicidal intent and threatening to drive the wrong way, Heitmann drove his vehicle at high speeds, ultimately colliding with an SUV and striking Aileen Pizarro and her 12-year-old daughter, Aryana.
Both Pizarro and Aryana died at the scene. Authorities note that in a separate case, the city agreed to pay $6.125 million to the families of the other victims.
