Authorities are searching for the hit-and-run driver responsible for the fatal collision that claimed the life of 38-year-old Gilbert Amaro in Lancaster on Monday night.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported that officers were dispatched to the intersection of Avenue J and Hanstead Avenue at around 11:40 p.m. after receiving a crash call.
Preliminary findings indicate that Amaro was walking northbound across Avenue J outside of a crosswalk when a sedan traveling westbound struck him. The vehicle hit him, and a second vehicle — a Toyota Camry traveling in the same direction — also collided with him as he remained on the roadway.
While the driver of the Camry stopped to provide assistance and later cooperated with investigators, the driver of the first vehicle fled the scene. Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics pronounced Amaro dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released further details about the hit-and-run in Lancaster.
