
Chris Raschke, a veteran land speed racer, died in a tragic crash at 280 mph while attempting to break a speed record during the “Speed Week” event at the Bonneville Salt Flats on Sunday, August 3.
According to the Southern California Timing Association (SCTA), the crash occurred around 3:03 p.m. when Raschke lost control of his vehicle approximately 2.5 miles into the run. Race director Keith Pedersen reported that Raschke had reached a speed of 280 mph shortly before the crash.
Car and Driver reported that the vehicle veered off course and went airborne before crashing.
Raschke was airlifted from the track by emergency personnel but sadly succumbed to his injuries later that day.
