CALIFORNIA — The dangerous practice of illegal street racing once again took its toll in the Central Valley. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Modesto, a Corvette and a Mustang were racing at high speed northbound on SR-99, just north of Standiford Avenue, when things went wrong.
The Corvette driver lost control, rolled over multiple times, and was ejected from the vehicle, coming to rest on Sisk Road. Tyler K. Azadzoi, 26, of Citrus Heights, suffered major injuries; his passenger, Ayesha Malik, 28, of Richmond, sustained minor injuries.
The Mustang’s driver, Raul Torres Jr., 22, of Manteca, stopped briefly after the crash but then fled the scene. He was later located at his home. Police seized his vehicle and are considering filing serious charges against both drivers.
Authorities warn that this type of street race in California continues to be a persistent issue, especially on the long straight stretches of Central Valley highways, where excessive speed can quickly turn deadly.
