CRESCENT CITY, CA – A Lay’s delivery truck crashed near Crescent City on Tuesday, around noon on U.S. 199. The vehicle fell approximately 150 feet down an embankment between Hiouchi and Gasquet, but surprisingly landed upright, avoiding a direct plunge into the Smith River.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the driver, a Crescent City resident, suffered only minor injuries. The accident occurred near milepost 8.49, in one of the most dangerous sections of the highway.
Recovering the truck is challenging due to the steep terrain, and crews are expected to continue recovery efforts. CHP warned drivers of potential delays of up to 20 minutes along U.S. 199 while the vehicle is removed.
U.S. 199 is one of Northern California’s main routes, following much of the Smith River and connecting Crescent City with nearby communities. Crescent City is situated approximately 20 miles south of the Oregon border, making this highway crucial for regional transportation.Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident near Crescent City. Meanwhile, drivers are advised to exercise caution on this scenic but hazardous route.
