SAN DIEGO, CA – Monday morning began with heavy traffic delays along the border of San Diego and Orange counties after a crash forced multiple lane closures on I-5 for several hours.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), officers first responded shortly after 12:30 a.m. near Basilone Road, close to the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. The closures created a backup that stretched for several miles toward San Clemente.
By 7:00 a.m., only two southbound lanes had reopened, while congestion continued to impact commuters.
CHP officials confirmed the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
