SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA — On Tuesday night and into early Wednesday morning, Highway 166 in California became the scene of two separate accidents that left several drivers injured and caused significant traffic disruptions.
The first crash happened shortly before 6:00 p.m. near mile-marker 32. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the two-vehicle collision was caused by a failed passing maneuver. Injuries ranged from mild to moderate, and one person was airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment.
Less than three hours later, around 8:30 p.m., a big rig overturned and caught fire on the same highway near Chimeneas Ranch Road. The crash caused significant damage to a guardrail and bridge, resulting in the complete closure of both lanes.
By Wednesday morning, CHP announced that Highway 166 had reopened under one-lane traffic control. Authorities also warned drivers on social media to expect delays in the area.
The investigation into both accidents on Highway 166 remains ongoing.
