CASTRO VALLEY, CA – A police chase in Castro Valley ended in tragedy early Saturday morning, leaving two people dead and three seriously injured, including two California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers.
According to CHP, the chase began around 3:40 a.m. when officers attempted to stop a white Mercedes-Benz speeding westbound on Interstate 580, near Edan Canyon Road. The driver refused to pull over and continued toward San Leandro, merging onto Interstate 238 westbound.
While trying to exit at East 14th Street, the Mercedes lost control and crashed into a sound wall. Moments later, the pursuing CHP cruiser also struck the same wall — though the two vehicles never collided, investigators confirmed.
The driver and a passenger in the Mercedes were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third passenger and both CHP officers were transported to a hospital with serious injuries.
The CHP Golden Gate Division’s Multi-Disciplinary Accident Investigation Team is leading the investigation to determine the exact cause of the crash.
