FAIRFIELD, CA — Early Tuesday morning, a weather-related crash in Fairfield on Interstate 80 claimed the life of a woman and left a man seriously injured, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The collision occurred around 2:15 a.m. near Manuel Campos Parkway, when the driver lost control of the vehicle amid heavy rain and slick road conditions.
Authorities confirmed the victim was a woman in her 20s, who was driving the car at the time of the crash. Her passenger, a man also in his 20s, was rushed to a nearby hospital with major injuries.
Investigators are still determining the exact cause of the crash, including the vehicle’s speed and whether alcohol or drugs played a role. However, poor visibility and wet weather were identified as key contributing factors.
Eastbound lanes of the freeway were closed during the investigation and reopened shortly after 4:30 a.m., CHP reported.
Officers reminded drivers to use extra caution when driving in rainy conditions, as wet roads and reduced visibility significantly increase the risk of accidents on highways like I-80.
