RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — A driver was killed Monday morning after a loose tire in Beaumont flew over the center divider and slammed into his windshield on the SR-60, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash happened shortly after 11:00 a.m. in the westbound lanes of SR-60 near Jack Rabbit Trail.
Investigators say a silver BMW 328i, driven by a 54-year-old man from Riverside, was traveling eastbound when its left rear tire detached and went airborne. The tire crossed the center divider and landed in the westbound lanes.
A 68-year-old Los Angeles man driving a white Toyota Sienna struck the tire. The impact crushed the windshield and roof, causing the driver to lose control. The Toyota hit the center divider and then crashed into a dirt embankment.
The Toyota driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. The BMW driver was not injured.
CHP continues to investigate. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Investigating Officer J. Esparza or Public Information Officer R. Palomera at the CHP San Gorgonio Pass office, 195 Highland Springs Avenue, Beaumont, CA 92223, phone (951) 846-5300.
