RANCHO CORDOVA, CA — A fight inside a moving vehicle ended in a serious crash Monday night on a Highway 50 off-ramp in Rancho Cordova, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash happened around 5:30 p.m. on the Mather Field Road off-ramp. Officers were originally responding to a report of a collision, but as they were on their way, witnesses called in to report a felony-level assault occurring between the vehicle’s occupants.
When officers arrived, they found a woman unconscious with cuts and injuries to her head and face. Authorities have not yet determined whether her injuries came from the physical altercation or the crash itself. She was transported to a nearby hospital.
A man who was driving or riding in the vehicle sustained minor injuries and was detained for questioning.
CHP investigators say the altercation began while the vehicle was traveling on Highway 50, before the driver exited onto the off-ramp. During the fight, the vehicle lost control and ultimately crashed into a hillside near the ramp.
