SAN JOSE, CA — A fiery crash on Highway 87 in San Jose claimed the lives of two people — an adult and a child — and left two other drivers injured Tuesday morning.
The collision happened shortly after the Curtner Avenue exit, when four vehicles collided and three of them burst into flames. The intense fire shot several feet into the air, creating a chaotic scene during the late-morning traffic rush.
Passing drivers captured video of three cars engulfed in flames, while one of the involved vehicles — a Toyota Sienna — managed to drive away despite damage. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the drivers of the burning vehicles escaped, but the two victims inside a Lexus were unable to get out.
CHP Officer Ross Lee stated there is no indication that alcohol or drugs contributed to the crash, though the investigation remains ongoing. Early visuals show two Teslas positioned in opposite directions, blocking lanes, and the Lexus crushed against the center divider.
Because of the fire damage and the extensive forensic work required, authorities shut down multiple lanes for several hours, causing heavy traffic backups and detours. All lanes reopened around 3:45 p.m.
