A 22-year-old motorcyclist from El Cajon was killed and his passenger seriously injured in a head-on collision with an SUV Sunday night in East County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just after 8 p.m. near the intersection of Avocado Boulevard and Explorer Road. CHP said the rider and a 20-year-old female passenger were traveling north on a Ducati motorcycle when they collided with a Ford Explorer making a left turn onto Explorer Road.
The impact ejected both riders. The male rider was pronounced dead at the scene, while the woman was transported to a hospital with major injuries. The driver of the Ford Explorer, a 40-year-old La Mesa man, suffered minor injuries.
Authorities issued a SigAlert, closing both directions of Avocado Boulevard for nearly two hours.
CHP said the cause remains under investigation and it is not yet clear if drugs or alcohol were involved.
