A stunt performer has filed a lawsuit against actor and director Kevin Costner and the production team behind Horizon: An American Saga: Chapter 2, alleging that she was subjected to an unplanned and traumatic scene during filming that left her psychologically scarred.
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court by 34-year-old Devyn LaBella, a veteran stunt performer whose credits include Barbie, American Horror Story, Yellowjackets, and CSI: Vegas. LaBella was hired in May 2023 as the stunt double for actress Ella Hunt on the second chapter of the western saga directed and co-written by Costner.
According to the complaint, the film’s script included a rehearsed and choreographed sexual assault scene that was initially handled with professional oversight—such as the presence of an intimacy coordinator and a reduced on-set crew. However, LaBella alleges that the following day, Costner directed a male actor to pin her down on a wagon and simulate a rape without warning or prior discussion.
The filing claims the scene was neither scheduled nor properly communicated, and that multiple takes were demanded without clear instruction as to when filming began or ended. LaBella’s legal team asserts that contractual safeguards were ignored and industry standards were violated, resulting in severe emotional trauma.
Costner’s attorney, Martin Singer, rejected the claims, characterizing LaBella as a “serial accuser” and asserting that her conduct following the shoot contradicted her allegations. According to Singer, LaBella expressed gratitude to the stunt coordinator after the filming concluded.
Following the alleged incident, LaBella says crew members isolated her and confined her to her trailer, a move that she claims further exacerbated her emotional distress.
She is seeking financial damages, a public apology, and a court order mandating that the defendants undergo sexual harassment training and include an intimacy coordinator on all future productions.
