A Chevy SUV driver was left dead after their vehicle got struck by an Amtrak train in Modesto Monday afternoon.
The fatal collision happened before 1:30 p.m. along State Route 132 west of Santa Fe Avenue. The SUV reportedly tried to pass through activated crossing arms and its side was violently struck by the oncoming train. The force of the impact caused the vehicle to catch fire.
Upon the arrival of police and first responders, the driver had already passed and was pronounced dead at the scene. Meanwhile a passenger aboard the train sustained minor injuries and was taken to treatment.
It is unknown why the SUV tried to cross while the train was active.
