Costco is facing a $14 million lawsuit filed by a California woman who alleges she suffered a traumatic brain injury (TBI) when a liquor cabinet fell on her inside one of the company’s stores, according to court documents.
The lawsuit, filed in April, states that Sadie Novotny was shopping with her husband at the Santa Rosa Costco when a floor model of a liquor cabinet allegedly toppled and struck her in the head. The cabinet was described as poorly supported and positioned on a visibly worn wooden panel, with thin legs providing minimal stability.
Novotny claims she sustained multiple injuries from the incident, including damage to her right shoulder, forearm, hand, fingers, and lower back. The impact also reportedly left her with a permanent traumatic brain injury.
The legal complaint accuses Costco of negligence and seeks $14.11 million in damages for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and long-term disability.
Costco has not publicly commented on the lawsuit. The case is currently pending in California court.
