NEEDLES, CA – A deadly collision between two semi-trucks shut down all westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near the agricultural inspection station on Sunday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).
The crash occurred around 10:48 a.m., just east of the inspection station near Needles. One of the trucks was reportedly hauling a UPS parcel trailer.
The impact completely blocked both westbound lanes, and a heavy-duty tow truck was called to assist with removing the vehicle. A diesel spill was also reported, prompting a hazmat response from Caltrans.
Traffic was diverted to the center divider as crews worked to clear the scene. By 1:16 p.m., the number one lane was reopened to traffic.
CHP confirmed that one person died at the scene. The identity of the victim has not been released. The cause of the collision between two semi-trucks near Needles remains under investigation.
