A pedestrian died early Friday after being struck on southbound Highway 99 just north of Fruitridge Road, California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials said.
Troopers were dispatched at 5:22 a.m. and found the victim lying in the No. 4 lane; paramedics pronounced the person dead at the scene. Investigators have not released the victim’s name or gender and have not confirmed reports the individual may have been homeless.
CHP closed the No. 4 and No. 5 lanes for roughly an hour, warning motorists to expect delays. A preliminary report listed three vehicles present—a 2013 Honda, a 2009 Toyota and a 2013 Toyota—but officers have not determined how many actually struck the pedestrian or what caused the collision.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or saw a pedestrian walking on Highway 99 before 5:22 a.m. is urged to contact the CHP South Sacramento office at (916) 897-5600.
The investigation is ongoing. No arrests or citations have been issued.
