A child was killed and five others injured after a large tree branch collapsed onto a summer camp site at King Gillette Ranch in the Santa Monica Mountains on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident occurred near the 1900 block of Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas. According to officials, the child was attending a camp organized at the ranch when the branch suddenly fell, striking multiple people.
Three individuals were transported to area hospitals, one by air, with injuries ranging from minor to critical. Two others sustained injuries but declined medical transport. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) confirmed the incident and expressed condolences to the families of those affected.
An investigation is underway in collaboration with Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies to determine what caused the branch to fall.
