Three Los Angeles deputies were left dead following an explosion that took place at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department training facility at the Biscailuz Center Training Academy in East L.A. Friday morning.
The fatal blast occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. Authorities confirmed that the incident may be connected to a grenade that had been retrieved from a Santa Monica garage and transported to the training facility the previous day.
Deputies were reportedly attempting to render the device safe when the explosion occurred. However, officials say it remains unclear whether that specific grenade was the cause of the blast.
The detectives killed in the incident were identified as Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus, and William Osborn.
The California Department of Justice and other law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosion. County officials and law enforcement leaders have extended their condolences to the families of the fallen deputies and the broader sheriff’s department community.
