BAKERSFIELD, CA (October 20, 2024) – Ricardo Aguilar, an 8-year-old boy from central Bakersfield, tragically died on Friday morning after being struck by a car near Roosevelt Elementary School on Wednesday. As he crossed Bank Street on his way home, a gray sedan hit him after stopping at a stop sign, then accelerating through the intersection. Surveillance footage captured the heartbreaking moment.
Ricardo, described by his family as an outgoing child who aspired to be a chef, was the 43rd pedestrian fatality in Kern County this year. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals in Bakersfield and Madera, they could not save him.
The accident has reignited concerns over traffic safety in the area. Neighbors have long advocated for better safety measures, including stop signs, speed bumps, and crossing guards. Jessica Turango, a local resident, expressed frustration over speeding in the area, emphasizing the need for a stoplight.
Councilmember Andrae Gonzales, representing the area, acknowledged the community’s safety concerns at the accident scene. He proposed enhancing crossing guard presence, increasing fines for speeding in school zones, and installing a four-way stop to address these issues.
The Aguilar family has started a GoFundMe to cover funeral expenses and support during this difficult time. Donations can be made through their GoFundMe page.
