SAN DIEGO, CA (November 18, 2024) – Young drivers aged 18 to 26 account for more than half of DUI homicides in San Diego County this year, according to the District Attorney’s Office. The county has seen 25 deaths from 20 DUI-related crashes in 2024, an increase compared to last year.
To combat the issue, the D.A.’s Office secured an $899,425 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to support DUI prosecutions and public education.
District Attorney Summer Stephan emphasized the importance of responsible decisions, especially during the holiday season. “Use ride-sharing services and ensure loved ones don’t drive impaired,” she said.
San Diego County’s Medical Examiner’s Office also received $600,000 to upgrade toxicology testing capabilities and train specialists, while $642,600 was allocated to the probation department for monitoring high-risk DUI offenders.
